Before

Hirsutism

You have probably come to terms with the ongoing battle against the hair on your legs, bikini line, underarms and then suddenly there is something else to contend with. You may never have had an issues with facial or tummy hair before but suddenly, there it is.

There are some areas of the body that are more susceptible to new hair growth than others, namely the lip, chin, nipples and stomach and due to ongoing hormonal changes in our bodies, these areas can be stubborn to treat.  Puberty, pregnancy, gender resignment, PCOS, early onset, peri or full blown menopause can all affect our bodies in many different way but new and excessive hair growth is just one symptom you may have to deal with.

Whether it’s hereditary or hormonal, unwanted and excessive hair growth can be an extremely upsetting and sensitive issue to discuss.

After

Treatments for Hirsutism

If you have Hirsutism, your GP may suggest:

  • losing weight if you’re overweight – this can help control hormone levels
  • a prescription cream to slow hair growth on your face (eflornithine cream)
  • taking a contraceptive pill if you’ve not been through the menopause yet – this can help control hormone levels

If these have not helped after 6 months, your GP may refer you to a specialist who may prescribe other medications to control your hormone levels.
